Product Recall: Hungry Jack’s Burping Garfield Cat Toys

Australia/Canberra: Hungry Jack’s Pty Ltd, a Woolloomooloo, New South Wales establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Burping Garfield Cat Toys from the Australian marketplace due to suspected failure to comply with Australia’s Mandatory Standard for Button Batteries with consequential risks of choking, oral injury, internal ingestion, GI tract laceration damage, bowel obstruction/perforation and sepsis, all serious health and safety hazards requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-altering injury or death.

Additional information:
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (“ACCC”) reports the following Children’s Toys are subject to this recall:

• Burping Garfield Cat-shaped Plastic Toys, an orange toy that makes burping sounds when activated, provided with Hungry Jack’s children’s meals.

==> No barcodes, APNs, manufacturing date codes, production dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Toys reportedly contain Button Batteries and are were known to be distributed in all Australian states, although it is always possible these Toys had wider distribution outside the country including over the Web. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the ACCC, Hungry Jack’s Pty Ltd. has recalled certain batch/lots of Burping Garfield Cat Toys from the Australian marketplace due to suspected failure to comply with Australia’s Mandatory Standard for Button Batteries and consequential risks of choking, oral injury, internal ingestion, GI tract laceration damage, bowel obstruction/perforation and sepsis. As a direct result of this suspected defect, you should not use the products identified above.

In this case, the recalled Toys do not comply with the mandatory information standard for products containing button/coin batteries in that they do not include the required warning information.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Burping Garfield Cat Toys, please do not use them nor let your child play with or near them. Instead, return the Toy to their nearest Hungry Jack’s restaurant for a free replacement for a non-battery toy.

Button Batteries pose serious risks choking, severe internal burn injuries or death to young children if they gain access to the button/coin batteries and swallow them or place them inside their body. Severe or death can happen in two (2) hours or less.
