Product Recall: BIG W Brilliant Basics Plastic Drink Bottles

Australia/Canberra: Woolworths Group trading as BIG W, a Bella Vista, New South Wales establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Brilliant Basics Sipper Plastic Drink Bottles from the Australian marketplace due to suspected component detachment and consequential risks of choking, oral injury, internal ingestion, GI tract laceration damage, bowel obstruction/perforation and sepsis, all serious health and safety hazards requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-altering injury or death.

Additional information:
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (“ACCC”) reports the following Plastic Drink Bottles are subject to this recall:

• Brilliant Basics 1L Sipper Drink Bottles, sold with a BIG W article code of 390679 in colour/styles as follows:
  • Pink with purple lid
  • Green with orange lid
  • Blue with green lid

These Brilliant Basics Sipper Plastic Drink Bottles were known to be marketed, distributed and sold in all Australian states, although it is always possible these products had wider distribution outside the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the ACCC, Woolworths Group trading as BIG W has recalled certain batch/lots of Brilliant Basics Sipper Plastic Drink Bottles from the Australian marketplace due to suspected component detachment. As a direct result of this suspected defect, you should neither use the recalled Plastic Drink Bottles identified above.

In this case, this recall was initiated after it was reported that the Bottle’s Silicone Sipper component has not been attached securely. As a result, the Sipper can become loose or detached and pose risks of choking, oral injury, internal ingestion, GI tract laceration damage, bowel obstruction/perforation and sepsis to people who utilize the product in a reasonable manner expected with its intended design and anticipated use.

In general, if glass, plastic or metal fragments are ingested, they could cut the mouth, stomach or other parts of the GI tract, cause intestinal perforation or serious infection and possibly require surgical intervention for their safe removal.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession the recalled Brilliant Basics Sipper Plastic Drink Bottles, please do not use them nor let your child play with or near them. Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 0-0-0, your closest hospital or emergency centre equipped to properly treat choking, oral injury, internal ingestion, GI tract laceration damage, bowel obstruction/perforation and/or sepsis.
