Canada FlagCanada/Ottawa: Victoria Community Food Hub Society, a Victoria, British Columbia establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of South Island branded Pesto from the Canadian marketplace due to suspected Clostridium botulinum contamination and consequential risks of Gram-positive bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health and safety hazards requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-altering injury or death.

Additional information:
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”) reports the following Pesto Sauce products are subject to this recall:

  • South Island branded Pesto Sauce, sold in 250 mL clear glass jars with black plastic tops and thought to be distributed on or about October 6, 17, and 26, 2023 at private functions and food fair shows in Victoria and Esquimalt, British Columbia.

Please consult the photograph above for details of the food’s packaging, design and retail presentation.

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Pesto Sauce products were known to be marketed, distributed and sold in the Canadian province of British Columbia, although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

As a result of this reported defect, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Pesto products identified above.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled South Island branded Pesto Sauce products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Botulism.
