Among the one hundred-and-three (103) recalls the NHTSA announced in June comes news of the following:

Logo - Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing ("Toyota")Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (“Toyota”), a Plano, Texas establishment and subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, a Toyota City, Japan establishment, has recalled an estimated 145,254 model year 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid, Lexus TX350, Lexus TX500 Hybrid and Lexus TX550 Hybrid+ Sport Utility Vehicles (“SUVs”) marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Air Bags – Curtain Air Bag may deploy improperly in apparent contravention of US FMVSS 226

NHTSA Safety Notification 24V461000 reports the Driver’s Side Curtain Air Bag may not unroll as intended and could partially deploy outside of an open Window. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 226 Ejection Mitigation.

According to the NHTSA, an improper deployment of the Side Curtain Air Bag can reduce occupant protection during a crash, motor vehicle collision (“MVC”) or other impact event with consequential serious injury and/or life-changing results.

The remedy is under development. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed between August 5, 2024 and August 19, 2024. A second notice will be sent once the remedy is available.
