US/Silver Spring: World Variety Produce, Inc.., a Los Angeles, California establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Melissa’s Kimchi Hot from the American marketplace due to suspected mislabeling and consequential improperly declared Fish, a known allergen, source of dietary intolerance and possible trigger of Anaphylaxis, a serious and potential fatal situation, requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-altering injury or death.

Additional information:
The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Fermented Cabbage products are subject to this recall:

• Melissa’s Kimchi Hot, sold in 14-ounce jars with the following batch/lots:
  • 420 cases with a batch/lot designation of 48528201
  • 420 cases with a batch/lot designation of 48858701
  • 150 cases with a batch/lot designation of 49003901
  • 130 cases with a batch/lot designation of 49003901-W0 product of USA

Please consult the photograph above for details of the food’s packaging, design and retail presentation. Additional images of the recalled Fermented Cabbage products can be found on the Web site above.

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Melissa’s Kimchi Hot, were known to be marketed, distributed and sold Sun International stores in the US state of Florida; Brookshire Brothers stores the US state of Texas; Oklahoma and Produce – Grocery Outlets in the US state of California, although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the FDA, World Variety Produce, Inc.. recalls certain batch/lots of Melissa’s Kimchi Hot from the American marketplace due to suspected mislabeling and consequential improperly declared Fish,. As a result of this reported defect, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Fermented Vegetable products identified above.

In this case, this recall was initiated after an internal finding of an product artwork review by Melissa’s Design/Artwork department revealed that the printed artwork was mislabeled and did not have an allergen listing of “Fish”.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of these recalled Melissa’s Kimchi Hot and could be allergic to their Fish ingredients, have a close family member who is allergic or has previously experienced Anaphylaxis or are unsure of your allergy status, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat Anaphylaxis.
