Among the forty-eight (48) recalls the European Union announced in its fourth (and final) report of August 2023, the following recall notification was made:

Nivea branded Pflegende After Sun After Sun Lotion, sold with a model number of 80434 and an EAN/barcode of 4005808482931. This recall alert was submitted by Hungary to the EU Gateway under alert number A12/01874/23.

Nivea branded Pflegende After Sun After Sun Lotion products were marketed, sold and delivered as consumer-grade lotion products intended for home and beach application. The recalled skincare products were produced in the Hungary and sold in 200 ml light blue moulded plastic bottles with dark blue printing.

No best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, batch/lot designations, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

The hazards identified in the Nivea Pflegende After Sun After Sun Lotion products include the reported finding that the recalled cosmetic cremes contain 2-(4-tert- butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (“BMHCA”), a chemical that is forbidden in Cosmetic Products within the European Marketplace.

According to the European Union, the chemical 2-(4-tert- butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (“BMHCA”) poses risks of harm to the reproductive system and the health of the unborn child as well as causing skin sensitisation when used in a reasonable manner expected and consistent with their intended design and anticipated use and therefore, could precipitate serious injury and/or life-changing health consequences.

As a result, utilizing the recalled Nivea Pflegende After Sun After Sun Lotion products in a reasonable manner expected and consistent with their intended design and anticipated use could precipitate serious injury and/or life-changing health consequences.

Proposed Remedy:
Due to these defects, the recalled Nivea Pflegende After Sun After Sun Lotion products reportedly do not comply with the requirements of Europe’s Cosmetic Products Regulation.

Consequently, a ban on the marketing and/or sales of this product and a withdrawal recall has been ordered in all European member countries. If encountered, you should not market, sell or use the recalled cosmetics.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Nivea Pflegende After Sun After Sun Lotion products, please do not use them nor let your child play with or near them. Instead, kindly contact the store from which you purchased the product for a refund.
