US/Silver Spring: Richin Trading Inc., an Alhambra, California establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Mini Fruit Jelly Cup confectionery products from the American marketplace due to possible presence of Konjac and consequential risks of choking, oral injury, GI tract damage, respiratory dysfunction and/or cardiac arrest, all serious health and safety hazards requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-altering injury or death.

The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Jelly Cup confectionery products are subject to this recall (in alphanumeric order):

• Sun Wave Mini Fruit Jelly Cups, sold in 35.27-ounce plastic jars of assorted flavor confections with a UPC of 715685121512
• Sun Wave Mini Fruit Jelly Cups, sold in 35.27-ounce plastic jars of lychee flavor confections with a UPC of 715685121529
• Sun Wave Mini Fruit Jelly Cups, sold in 35.27-ounce plastic jars of mango flavor confections with a UPC of 715685121536
• Sun Wave Mini Fruit Jelly Cups, sold in 52.91-ounce plastic jars of assorted flavor confections with a UPC of 715685121437
• Sun Wave Mini Fruit Jelly Cups, sold in 52.91-ounce plastic jars of mango flavor confections with a UPC of 715685121444
• Sun Wave Mini Fruit Jelly Cups, sold in 52.91-ounce plastic jars of lychee flavor confections with a UPC of 715685121451

==> No item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Sun Wave branded Mini Fruit Jelly Cups may have been marketed, distributed and sold in all US states, although it is always possible these Jelly Cup confectionery products had wider distribution outside the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the FDA, Richin Trading has recalled certain batch/lots of Mini Fruit Jelly Cup confectionery products from the American marketplace due to risks of choking, oral injury, internal ingestion, GI tract laceration damage, bowel obstruction and sepsis. As a result of this reported defect, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Jelly Cup confectionery products identified above.

In this case, this recall was initiated after small jelly cups such as those identified above have previously been implicated in choking deaths of children, typically due to the presence of Konjac, a subtropical vegetable that is processed into a starchy thickening agent. Konjac is often used in Asian noodles and confectionery as a substitute for gelatin.

Small jelly cups have previously been implicated in choking deaths of children, in part because large portions of Konjac are difficult to chew and break in smaller pieces making it unnecessarily difficult to swallow, especially for children. In addition, Konjac-based products can expand while being chewed and block the throat and cause choking, oral injury, GI tract damage, respiratory dysfunction and/or cardiac arrest.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Sun Wave Mini Fruit Jelly Cups, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the Fruit Jelly Cups to the store where you purchased it for a full refund. Failing that, kindly dispose of them in a sealed package inside a secure garbage can with a tight-fitting lid to prevent accidental ingestion by children, pets and/or farm animals.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat choking, oral injury, GI tract damage, respiratory dysfunction and/or cardiac arrest.
