Food Recall: Compliments & Summer Fresh Hummus

Canada/Ottawa: Summer Fresh Salads Inc., a Woodbridge, Ontario establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Compliments Naturally Simple branded and Summer Fresh branded Hummus Spread products from the Canadian marketplace due to suspected plastic fragment contamination and consequential risks of choking, oral injury, internal ingestion, GI tract laceration damage, bowel obstruction and sepsis, all serious health and safety hazards requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-altering injury or death.

Additional information:
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”) reports the following Hummus Spread products are subject to this recall:

• Compliments Naturally Simple branded Garlic Hummus Spreads, sold in 227 gram plastic tubs with a best-before date code of 2023/FE/10, a batch/lot code of 223508 and a UPC of 0 55742 53567 9
• Summer Fresh branded Roasted Garlic Hummus Spreads, sold in 227 gram plastic tubs with a best-before date of 2023/FE/24, a batch/lot code of 223508 and a UPC of 7 73200 70234 9

Please consult the photographs above and below for details of the food’s packaging, design and retail presentation.

==> No item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Hummus Spreads were known to be marketed, distributed and sold in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Nova Scotia although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the CFIA, Summer Fresh Salads Inc. has recalled certain batch/lots of Compliments Naturally Simple branded and Summer Fresh branded Hummus Spread products from the Canadian marketplace due to suspected plastic fragment contamination. As a result of this reported defect, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Hummus Spreads identified above.

In general, if glass, plastic or metal fragments are ingested, they could cut the mouth, stomach or other parts of the GI tract, cause intestinal perforation or serious infection and possibly require surgical intervention for their safe removal.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Compliments Naturally Simple branded and/or Summer Fresh branded Hummus Spread products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat choking, oral injury, internal ingestion, GI tract laceration damage, bowel obstruction and/or sepsis.
