Among the forty-three (43) recalls the European Union announced in its fifth (and final) report of September 2022, the following recall notification was made:

Pepco branded Mickey Foldable Pouffe Cushioned Footstools

Pepco branded Mickey Foldable Pouffe Cushioned Footstools sold with a SKU of SKU 326076. This recall alert was submitted by Poland to the EU Safety Gateway under alert number A12/01340/22.

These Pepco branded Mickey Foldable Pouffe Cushioned Footstools were marketed, sold and delivered as consumer-grade furniture products designed as footrests with sitting or low seats with no back. The furniture products were made available in a red and black pattern with a solid black-colored top and a stylized Mickey Mouse imprint with the word, “MICKEY” printed in bold red letters on a white background. The stylized Mickey Mouse drawing is wearing a red helmet and is about to leap on a skateboard. The design is duplicated on the Footstool’s lid.

No EAN/barcodes, manufacturing date codes, batch/lot designations, production dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

The hazards reported in the recalled Pepco branded Mickey Foldable Pouffe Cushioned Footstools include the report that the outer plastic material of the product contains an excessive concentration of bis(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate (“DEHP”) (measured value up to 11.23 % by weight). This Phthalate may harm the health by causing possible damage to the reproductive system. Young children are particularly sensitive to reproductive and mutagenic damage caused by Phthalates.

As a consequence, utilizing the recalled Pepco branded Mickey Foldable Pouffe Cushioned Footstools in a reasonable manner expected with their intended design and anticipated use could precipitate serious injury and/or life-changing health consequences.

Due to these defects, the recalled Pepco branded Mickey Foldable Pouffe Cushioned Footstools reportedly do not comply with the requirements of Europe’s REACH Regulations. Specifically, as a result of the chemical analysis, it was found that the product did not meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 of 18 December 2006 on registration, assessment, permits and restrictions on chemicals.

Disposal of this product must be in accordance with local municipal hazardous waste requirements to protect your personal safety, the local drinking water supply and the ecosystem. Please consult your local municipal waste authority for the correct steps for your particular community.

Consequently, a recall of these Pepco branded Mickey Foldable Pouffe Cushioned Footstools from end users within the European marketplace as well as a withdrawal of the product from EU member states has been ordered. You should not market, sell or use these recalled furniture products.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Pepco branded Mickey Foldable Pouffe Cushioned Footstools, please do not use them. Instead, kindly return the Cushioned Footstools to the store or online outlet where you purchased them for a refund.

If you have a medical emergency, please contact 1-1-2, your closest hospital or emergency centre equipped to properly assess and treat reproductive system and/or mutagenic injury and/or damage.
