Australia FlagAustralia/Canberra: General Mills Australia Pty Ltd., a Mount Waverly Melbourne, Australia establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Häagen-Dazs branded Vanilla Ice Cream products and Häagen-Dazs branded Classic Collection Mini Cups Ice Cream from the Australian marketplace due to suspected Ethylene Oxide chemical contamination and consequential risks of carcinogenic (i.e., Cancer causing), mutagenic (cell modifying) and reprotoxic (i.e., capable of damaging sex cells and reproductive potential of children) damage, all serious health and safety hazards requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-altering injury or death.

Additional information:
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (“ACCC”) reports the following Ice Cream products are subject to this recall:

  • Häagen-Dazs branded Vanilla Ice Cream, sold in 457 mL paper tubs; affected batch/lots: all best-before dates ranging from 04.07.2022 (i.e., April 7, 2022) up to and including 21.07.2023 (April 7, 2022)
  • Häagen-Dazs branded Classic Collection Mini Cups Ice Cream, sold in 4 by 95 mL paper mini-tubs; affected batch/lots: all best-before dates ranging from 04.07.2022 (i.e., April 7, 2022) up to and including 21.07.2023 (April 7, 2022)

==> No barcodes, APNs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Häagen-Dazs branded Ice Cream are known to have been marketed, distributed and sold in the Australian states, although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

Please consult the photograph above for details of the food’s packaging, design and retail presentation. Additional images of the recalled Ethylene Oxide chemical contamination can be found on the Web site above.

According to the ACCC, General Mills Australia has recalled certain batch/lots of Häagen-Dazs branded Vanilla Ice Cream products and Häagen-Dazs branded Classic Collection Mini Cups Ice Cream from the Australian marketplace due to suspected Ethylene Oxide chemical contamination. As a direct result of this suspected defect, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Häagen-Dazs branded Ice Cream identified above.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household rubbish, making sure small children and pets can’t access the suspect food.

Ethylene oxide is a chemical disinfectant used in situation where steam or other disinfectant method are impossible or impractical. The chemical is suspected of being carcinogenic (i.e., Cancer causing), mutagenic (cell modifying) and reprotoxic (i.e., capable of damaging sex cells and reproductive potential of children). The chemical is banned in the European Union with no safe level of exposure known.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession the recalled Ice Cream, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 0-0-0, your closest hospital or emergency centre equipped to properly treat Ethylene Oxide chemical comtamination.
