US FlagUS/Silver Spring: Big Olaf Creamery, a Sarasota, Florida establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of all flavors and all batch/lots of Big Olaf branded Ice Cream products from the American marketplace due to suspected Listeria monocytogenes contamination and consequential risks of Gram-positive bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health and safety hazards requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-altering injury or death.

Additional information:
The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Ice Cream products are subject to this recall:

  • The Big Olaf branded Ice Cream, sold to consumers in plastic pint-size containers, plastic half-gallon containers, and plastic 2.5-gallon tubs, scoopable sold to the independent retail stores. All flavors, lots, codes and all expiration dates up to and including 6/30/2022 are included in this recall.

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Ice Cream products were known to be marketed, distributed and sold from Big Olaf retailers in Florida as well as to consumers in restaurants and senior homes, and one (1) location in Fredericksburg, Ohio, although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the FDA, Big Olaf Creamery has recalled certain batch/lots of all flavors and all batch/lots of Big Olaf branded Ice Cream products from the American marketplace due to suspected Listeria monocytogenes contamination. As a result of this reported defect, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Ice Cream products identified above.

On Friday July 1, 2022, Big Olaf Creamery was informed of an outbreak investigation by the Florida Department of Health and Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services and immediately ceased production and distribution of the ice cream product.

As of Friday, July 8, 2022, the CDC reported that a total of 23 people were infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes from ten (10) states. Eighteen (18) people interviewed reported eating ice cream, 10 reported eating Big Olaf Creamery branded Ice Cream or eating at locations that might have been supplied by Big Olaf Creamery. This is an ongoing investigation and other ice cream brands not related to Big Olaf were mentioned as a possible source as well.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Big Olaf branded Ice Cream products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the Dairy products to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Listeriosis.
