Australia FlagAustralia/Canberra: The Community Co-operative Store, a Nuriootpa, South Australia establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Barossa Fresh Lamb Mince and Barossa Fresh Beef Mince products from the Australian marketplace due to suspected plastic fragment and metal fragment contamination with consequential risks of choking, oral injury, internal ingestion, GI tract laceration damage, bowel obstruction and/or sepsis, all serious health and safety hazards requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-altering injury or death.

Additional information:
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (“ACCC”) reports the following Fresh Lamb Mince and Fresh Beef Mince products are subject to this recall:

  • Barossa branded Fresh Lamb Mince, sold in ~500 gram plastic cling-wrapped trays with a weigh-scale label with an APN/barcode and the phrase, “BAROSSA FRESH” in red block letters and a best-by date of 25/04/22 (i.e., April 25, 2022)
  • Barossa branded Fresh Beef Mince – No Preservatives Added, sold in ~600 to ~800 gram plastic cling-wrapped trays with a weigh-scale label with an APN/barcode and the phrase, “BAROSSA FRESH” in red block letters and a best-by date of 25/04/22 (i.e., April 25, 2022)

==> No barcodes, APNs, item numbers, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Fresh Lamb Mince and Fresh Beef Mince products were known to be marketed, distributed and sold in the Australian state of South Australia, although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the ACCC, the Community Co-operative Store in Nuriootpa has recalled certain batch/lots of Barossa Fresh Lamb Mince and Barossa Fresh Beef Mince products from the Australian marketplace due to suspected plastic fragment and metal fragment contamination. As a result of these reported defects and associated risks, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Fresh Lamb Mince and Fresh Beef Mince products identified above.

In general, if glass, plastic or metal fragments are ingested, they could cut the mouth, stomach or other parts of the GI tract, cause intestinal perforation or serious infection and possibly require surgical intervention for their safe removal.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household rubbish, making sure small children and pets can’t access the suspect food.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession the recalled Barossa Fresh Lamb Mince and/or Barossa Fresh Beef Mince products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

Please note: while these Mince products may be close to or past their use-by dates, they may be in your freezers or storage chillers. If you have purchased these products since April 1, 2022, please check your refrigerators, chillers and/or freezers to ensure these food products have not been stored for future consumption. If found, these products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 0-0-0, your closest hospital or emergency centre equipped to properly treat choking, oral injury, internal ingestion, GI tract laceration damage, bowel obstruction and sepsis.
