Among the thirty-six (36) recalls the European Union announced in its third report of April 2022, the following recall notification was made:

Fitbit branded Ionic Smartwatch

Fitbit branded Ionic Smartwatch products were sold with a model number of FB503. This recall alert was submitted by Ireland to the EU Safety Gateway under alert number A11/00058/22.

These Fitbit branded Ionic Smartwatches were marketed, sold and delivered as GPS enabled, fitness-oriented digital timepieces. The Watches are equipped with a Lithium-ion battery that has an approximate four (4) day battery life depending on individual usage. Further, these products have a 1.4″ color LCD display and were sold with multiple band sizes to accommodate varying consumer wrist sizes.

The Fitbit branded Ionic Smartwatches can be identified with a model number FB503 on the back of Ionic, under the “CE” approval mark and above the clasp. Please see the photograph below for details.

No EANs/barcodes, manufacturing date codes, batch/lot designations, production dates, registration numbers or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

The hazard reported in the recalled these Fitbit branded Ionic Smartwatches is that the Lithium-ion battery that powers the Ionic reportedly overheats during usage and/or charging. If this defect occurs, it could pose risks of burns, smoke inhalation, respiratory failure, cardiac system collapse and/or property damage.

  • As a consequence, utilizing these products in a reasonable manner expected with their intended design and anticipated use, a wearer of the recalled Iconic Smartwatch products can suffer serious injury and/or life-changing health consequences.

Proposed Remedy:
Due to these defects, the recalled Fitbit branded Ionic Smartwatches reportedly do not comply with the health and safety requirements of Europe’s Radio Equipment Directive. As well, the Ionic Smartwatches fail to comply with the European standard EN 60950-1.

Consequently, a withdrawal of the Fitbit branded Ionic Smartwatches from customers worldwide has been ordered. You should not market, sell or use these recalled protective smartwatch products.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Fitbit branded Ionic Smartwatches, please do not use them. Instead, kindly return the product to the store or online outlet where you purchased it for a refund.
