US FlagUS/Washington: Otis Elevator Company, a Farmington, Connecticut establishment and CemcoLift Elevators Systems, formerly a Hatfield, Pennsylvania establishment and former subsidiary of Otis Elevator Company, recall an estimated 5,000 Residential Elevators from the American marketplace due to suspected entrapment hazard with consequential risks of laceration, traumatic brain injury (“TBI” or “concussion”), bone fractures and/or central nervous system (“CNS”) injury, all serious health and safety hazards requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-altering injury or death.

Additional information:
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) reports this recall involves certain Otis & CemcoLift Residential Elevators marketed, sold and delivered in the United States, as follows:

  • Otis and CemcoLift Residential Elevators, consisting of consumer grade elevators to be used in residential dwellings manufactured from 1999 to 2012.

Please consult the photograph above for details of the product’s design and retail presentation. One (1) additional image of the recalled Otis and CemcoLift Elevator Residential Elevators can be found on the Web site listed above.

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the CPSC, young children can become entrapped in the space between the Exterior Landing (i.e., the Hoistway) door and the Interior Elevator Car Door or Gate if there is a hazardous gap, and suffer serious injuries or death when the Elevator is called to another floor when utilizing the Elevator in a reasonable manner expected with its intended design and anticipated use.

Otis is aware of at least four (4) incidents involving an Otis or CemcoLift Private Residence Elevator that resulted in serious life-changing injuries, including a crushed spine and abdomen, fractured hip, broken arm and feet and/or bruising to the face and chest.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Otis or CemcoLift Residential Elevators, please keep unsupervised young children away from the recalled Elevators and contact Otis to schedule a free inspection and the installation of space guard(s), if necessary.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat entrapment, amputation, laceration, crush, concussion, bone fractures and/or central nervous system (“CNS”) injury.
