US NHTSA Recalls: BMW 328d, 535d, 740Ld & X5 Vehicles

Among the eighty-four (84) recalls the NHTSA announced in November comes news of the following:

Logo - BMW of North AmericaBMW of North America, LLC (“BMW”), a Greer, South Carolina establishment and a subsidiary of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG of Munich, Germany, has recalled an estimated 50,404 model year 2013-2018 BMW 328d, BMW 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 BMW 328d Sports Wagon, BMW 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 BMW 535d, BMW 535d xDrive, 2015 BMW 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 BMW X3 xDrive28d SAV, and 2014-2017 BMW X5 xDrive35d SAV diesel vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (“EGR”) Module with an Integrated Cooler marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Fuel System, Diesel – Coolant Leak inside EGR Module may cause fire

NHTSA Safety Notification 21V907000 reports the EGR Cooler may leak internally, causing Coolant to mix with Diesel Engine soot, which could result in smoldering particles and a melting Intake Manifold.

According to the NHTSA, a melting Intake Manifold increases the risk of a fire, explosion, burns and/or smoke inhalation with consequential life-changing or life-ending results

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat burns, scalds, explosive impact injuries, blast injury, smoke inhalation and/or respiratory and/or cardiac injury.

Please note that under 49 United States Code § 30112(a), it is illegal for anyone, including a manufacturer, distributor, dealer or retailer to sell an item of equipment or vehicle that fails to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Proposed Remedy:
Authorized BMW Dealers will inspect the EGR Cooler and inspect the Intake Manifold, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 12, 2022. This recall includes all vehicles previously recalled under NHTSA 18V-755. Vehicles previously recalled under NHTSA 18V-755 will need to have the new remedy performed for this recall. Owners may contact BMW Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-525-7417 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”) for more information. No manufacturer’s designation was listed for this recall at press time.
