US FlagUS/Washington: SAS Foods Enterprises Inc., an Elk Grove Village, Illinois establishment, recalls an estimated 3,768 pounds of Beef and Chicken Empanada products that were reportedly produced without the benefit of Federal Inspection and bear a label with a false USDA mark of inspection from the American marketplace due to suspected production without the benefit of Federal Inspection with consequential risks of bacterial contamination, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

Additional information:
The United States Department of Agriculture (“USDA”) reports the following Beef and Chicken Empanada products are thought to have been produced on various dates ranging from January 1, 2020 through September 11, 2021 and are subject to this recall:

  • SAS Food Empanadas De Pollo Chicken Patties, packaged in one (1)-pound zip-lock bags or clear, plastic containers
  • SAS Food Empanadas De Carne Beef Patties, packaged in one (1)-pound zip-lock bags or clear, plastic containers

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers, best-before dates, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the USDA, the products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 38548” inside the USDA mark of inspection; however, the recalling company (i.e., SAS Foods Enterprises Inc.,) has no affiliation with Establishment 38548.

These Beef and Chicken Empanada products were known to be marketed, distributed and sold in the US states of Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin, although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

The problem was discovered after FSIS received an anonymous tip and initiated an investigation.

Please note: while these Beef and Chicken Empanada products may be close to or past their use-by dates, they may be in your freezers or storage chillers. If you have purchased these products within the range of January 1, 2020 through September 22, 2021, please check your refrigerators, chillers and/or freezers to ensure these food products have not been stored for future consumption. If found, these products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for refund.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure small children and pets can’t access the suspect food.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the subject Beef and Chicken Empanada products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, kindly return the products to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
