Canada FlagCanada/Ottawa: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”), an Ottawa, Ontario-based statutory regulatory and food safety authority, and the Ontario Ministry of Health warn against the use and/or consumption of certain batch/lots of Shredded Pork Rind and Shredded Pork Skin products from the Canadian marketplace due to suspected Salmonella contamination and consequential risks of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health and safety hazards/situations requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize pain and suffering as well as prevent life-changing injury.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”) reports the following Pork products are subject to this warning:

  • Unbranded Shredded Pork Rinds, sold frozen in clear un-weighed plastic bags, with no labels, no lot codes, no identifiers, and no cooking instructions.
  • Unbranded Shredded Pork Skins, sold frozen in clear un-weighed plastic bags, with no labels, no lot codes, no identifiers, and no cooking instructions.

Please consult the photograph above for details of the food’s packaging, design and retail presentation.

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this food warning notification.

These Unbranded Shredded Pork Rinds and Unbranded Shredded Pork Skins were known to be marketed, distributed and sold in the Canadian province of Ontario, specifically in the Greater Toronto Area (“GTA”), although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the CFIA, it and the Ontario Ministry of Health have warned not to consume certain batch/lot of Shredded Pork Rind and Shredded Pork Skin from the Canadian marketplace due to suspected Salmonella contamination. As a result of this reported defect, you should neither serve nor consume the subject Pork products identified above.

The suspect Pork products are known to have been sold to certain restaurants in the Greater Toronto Area (“GTA”) that serve Vietnamese and/or other Asian-style foods.

Please note: there have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these Pork products. The Ontario Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Public Health Ontario, local public health units and food safety partners, are actively investigating an outbreak of human illness, specifically Salmonellosis.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the subject Shredded Pork Rinds and/or Shredded Pork Skins, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, kindly return the product to the wholesaler where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Salmonellosis.
