US NHTSA Recalls: Micro Bird MBII, T-Series, G5 Buses

Among the one-hundred-and-fourteen (114) recalls the NHTSA announced in August came news of the following:

Logo - Corp. Micro Bird Inc. ("Micro Bird")Corp. Micro Bird Inc. (“Micro Bird”), a Fort Valley, Georgia establishment and a subsidiary of Blue Bird has recalled an estimated 17,204 model year 2003-2022 MBII, T-Series and G5 School Buses marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Structure – Emergency Release Handle not functional

NHTSA Safety Notification 21V530000 reports the Emergency Release Handle on the Service Door may bind, not allowing the Door Panels to open.

According to the NHTSA, the Service Door may not open, preventing evacuation of the vehicle in case of emergency, and increasing the risk of injury in the event of crash, motor vehicle collision (“MVC”) or other impact event, or fire, explosion, burns and/or smoke inhalation with consequential serious injury and/or life-changing results.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat lacerations, concussions, bone fractures, amputation, central nervous system (“CNS”) damage and/or internal injuries, burns, scalds, blast injury, smoke inhalation and/or respiratory and/or cardiac injury.

Please note that under 49 United States Code § 30112(a), it is illegal for anyone, including a manufacturer, distributor, dealer or retailer to sell an item of equipment or vehicle that fails to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Proposed Remedy:
Authorized Micro Bird Dealers will provide instructions on how to correctly adjust the Service Door, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 1, 2021. Owners may contact Micro Bird Customer Service toll-free at 1-819-477-2012 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”) for more information. Micro Bird’s designation for this recall is 21-087-DUS.
