US NHTSA Recalls: GM Chevrolet Bolt Electric Vehicles

Washington, DC: As of Tuesday, August 24, 2021, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”), a division of the US Department of Transportation, has posted a total of eighty-five (85) vehicle, tire, accessory or other automotive-related product recalls this month.

Among the eighty-five (85) recalls the NHTSA announced in August comes news of the following:

General Motors LLC (“GM”), a Detroit, Michigan establishment, has recalled an estimated 57,402 model year 2017-2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV vehicles marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Electrical System – High Voltage Battery may catch fire

NHTSA Safety Notification 21V560000 reports the High Voltage Battery could catch fire when charged to full or nearly full capacity.

According to the NHTSA, a Battery fire increases the risk of injury, explosion, burns and/or smoke inhalation with consequential life-changing or life-ending results.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat burns, scalds, blast injury, smoke inhalation and/or respiratory and/or cardiac injury.

Please note that under 49 United States Code § 30112(a), it is illegal for anyone, including a manufacturer, distributor, dealer or retailer to sell an item of equipment or vehicle that fails to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Proposed Remedy:
Defective Battery Modules will be replaced by General Motors, free of charge. Owners are advised to take the following interim steps: Activate either the Hill Top Reserve (2017 and 2018 models) or Target Charge Level (2019 models) feature in their vehicle to limit the charge level to 90%, charge their vehicle more frequently, avoid depleting the Battery to 70 miles range remaining, park outside after charging, and do not charge the vehicle indoors overnight.

Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 13, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 13, 2021. Owners may contact the Bolt EV Concierge Team at 1-833-382-4389 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”) for more information.
