US FlagUS/Silver Spring: Logo - New Leaf Community MarketMai Franchising Inc., an Allentown, Pennsylvania establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of 103 Sushi containing Cocktail Shrimp from the American marketplace due to suspected Salmonella contamination and consequential risks of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health and safety hazards requiring immediate medical intervention to minimize suffering and prevent life-changing injury.

The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Sushi products are subject to this recall:

  • Spicy Shrimp Tempura Rolls, sold with a UPC of 81282401109
  • Special Roll Super Set 16-piecc, sold with a UPC of 81282401129
  • Chef’s Assorted Nigiri 6-piecc, sold with a UPC of 81282401130
  • Scorpion Roll, sold with a UPC of 81282401138
  • Br Special Roll Super Set 16-piece, sold with a UPC of 81282401203
  • Cooked Variety Pack, sold with a UPC of 81282401349
  • Shrimp Mango Fresh Roll, sold with a UPC of 81282401374

==> No item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Sushi products were known to be marketed, distributed and sold in the US state of California in specific New Leaf Community Market stores although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information. The following New Leaf Community Market stores are known to have sold the recalled Sushi products:

  • New Leaf Market – Capitola, located at 1210 41st Avenue, Capitola, CA 95010
  • New Leaf Market – Evergreen, located at 5667 Silver Creek Valley Road, San Jose, CA 95138
  • New Leaf Market – Halfmoon Bay, located at 150 San Metro Road, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019
  • New Leaf Market – Pacific, located at 1134 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz, CA 95060
  • New Leaf Market – Santa Cruz, located at 1101 Fair Avenue, Santa Cruz, CA 95060

According to the FDA, Mai Cuisine has recalled an estimated 103 Sushi products made with Cocktail Shrimp purchased from New Leaf Market in the state of California after an earlier recall for Frozen Shrimp by Avanti Frozen Foods Pvt. Ltd, caused by suspected Salmonella contamination in the primary Frozen Shrimp ingredient. As a result of this reported defect, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Sushi products identified above.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

Proposed Remedy:
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Sushi products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the Sushi to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

Please note: while these food products may be close to or past their use-by dates, they may be in your freezers or storage chillers. If you have purchased these products during the time period ranging from August 10, 2021 to August 16, 2021, please check your refrigerators, chillers and/or freezers to ensure these food products have not been stored for future consumption. If found, these products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Salmonellosis.
