Recall Category: Seat Belts – Passenger Seat Belt malfunction in apparent contravention of US FMVSS 208

NHTSA Safety Notification 21V554000 reports the Passenger Seat Belt Automatic Locking Retractor (“ALR”) may deactivate early, before the webbing fully retracts. As such, these assemblies fail to comply with the requirements of US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”

Logo - MiniAccording to the NHTSA, during a crash, a Seat Belt Retractor that does not function as intended increases the risk of serious injury and/or life-changing results.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat lacerations, concussions, bone fractures, amputation, central nervous system (“CNS”) damage and/or internal injuries.

Please note that under 49 United States Code § 30112(a), it is illegal for anyone, including a manufacturer, distributor, dealer or retailer to sell an item of equipment or vehicle that fails to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Proposed Remedy:
Authorized Dealers will inspect the Seat Belt Retractors (including the Seat Belts) and, if necessary, replace the Retractors, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 13, 2021. BMW owners may contact BMW Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-525-7417 while MINI owners can contact the company at 1-866-825-1525. Rolls Royce owners should contact Rolls Royce Customer Service toll-free at 1-877-877-3735 and Toyota owners can contact the company at 1-888-270-9371.
