Australia FlagAustralia/Canberra: Villeroy & Boch Australia Pty Ltd, a Brookvale, New South Wales establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Villeroy & Boch Essentials Green and Brown Bamboo Placemats from the Australian marketplace due to suspected Azo-Dye contamination and consequential risks of Carcinogenic compound release, Cancer, long-term heath effects including mutagenicity, all requiring immediate medical intervention.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (“ACCC”) reports the following Bamboo Placemat products are subject to this recall:

  • Villeroy & Boch Essentials Green and Brown Bamboo Placemats, sold in two style/colours:
    • Bamboo Placemats, sold in solid dark green with a colour code of “02” and an item number of 35-9040-0005 E
    • Bamboo Placemats, sold in solid brown with a colour code of “08” and an item number of 35-9040-0009 E

==> No barcodes, APNs, item numbers, manufacturing date codes, production dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

The recalled Placemats are thought to have been marketed, distributed and sold in all Australian states although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution outside the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the ACCC, the dye used in the cotton piping of the recalled green and brown Placemats reportedly contains hazardous Azo-Dyes chemicals. Certain Azo-Dyes may release Carcinogenic compounds and it is recommend that exposure to these Dyes be greatly minimised or completely eliminated.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Bamboo Placemats, please do not use them. Instead, kindly return the products to a Villeroy & Boch sales outlet or to Villeroy & Boch by post for a full refund.

Please note: disposal of this product must be in accordance with local municipal hazardous waste requirements to protect the drinking water supply and the ecosystem.
