US NHTSA Recalls: GMC Sierra & Chevrolet Silverado Trucks

Among the forty-eight (48) recalls the NHTSA announced in July, comes news of the following:

Logo - General Motors LLCGeneral Motors LLC (“GM”), a Detroit, Michigan establishment, has recalled an estimated 410,019 model year 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500 Trucks marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Air Bags – Roof Rail Air Bag Inflator may rupture

NHTSA Safety Notification 21V504000 reports the Roof-Rail Air Bag (“RRAB”) Inflator End Cap may detach from the Inflator, or the Inflator Sidewall may rupture.

According to the NHTSA, a separated Inflator End Cap or Inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the End Cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash, motor vehicle collision (“MVC”) or other impact event with consequential serious injury and/or life-changing results.

Please note that under 49 United States Code § 30112(a), it is illegal for anyone, including a manufacturer, distributor, dealer or retailer to sell an item of equipment or vehicle that fails to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Authorized General Motors Dealers will replace the Left and Right Side RRAB Modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing registered owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed August 16, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available.
