Home Depot Sierra Citronella Oil Recall [Canada]

Canada/Ottawa: Home Depot Canada Inc., a Toronto, Ontario establishment, recalls an estimated 28,043 bottles of Sierra Citronella Oil from the Canadian marketplace due to suspected failure to meet Leak Test Requirements for consumer chemical products required by Canada’s Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001 under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act. These Citronella Oil products pose an aspiration hazard if inhaled or ingested. Further, leaks from the Citronella Oil containers could also result in unintentional exposure to the product and lead to serious illness or injury, including death.

Additional information:
Health Canada/Santé Canada (“HCSC”) reports the following Citronella Oil products are subject to this recall:

  • Sierra Citronella Oil, sold in a 1.89 L black bottles with a white closure cap with a model number of 1903 and a UPC of 808862219031

Please consult the photograph above for details of the product’s packaging, design and retail presentation. One (1) additional image of the recalled Citronella Oil products can be found on the Web site above.

==> No best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Citronella Oil products were known to be marketed, distributed and sold in Home Depot Canada stores across all the Canadian provinces although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to Health Canada, the recalled Citronella Oil products do not meet the Leak Test Requirements for consumer chemical products required by the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001 under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act. As stated above, these products pose an aspiration hazard if inhaled or ingested. Leaks from the container could result in unintentional exposure to the product and lead to serious illness or injury, including death.

Aspiration into the lungs can occur when the product enters the lungs directly or is coughed up or vomited after being ingested. This coughing/vomiting could cause small particles of the product to travel into the lungs. This may result in serious health effects including chemical-induced Pneumonia to people who utilize the product in a reasonable manner expected with its intended design and anticipated use.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Citronella Oil products, please do not use them. Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

Disposal of this product must be in accordance with local municipal hazardous waste requirements to protect your personal safety, the local drinking water supply and the ecosystem. Please consult your local municipal waste authority for the correct steps for your particular community.
