US NHTSA Recalls: Blue Bird School Buses

Among the forty-four (44) recalls the NHTSA has announced this month, comes news of the following:

Logo - Blue Bird Body CompanyBlue Bird Body Company (“Blue Bird”), a Fort Valley, Georgia establishment, has recalled an estimated 21V284000 model year 2020-2022 Vision and All American School Buses marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Service Brakes, Air – Check Valve Retainer not properly seated in apparent contravention of US FMVSS 121

NHTSA Safety Notification 21V284000 reports a Retainer was not properly seated in the SC-3 Single Check Valve and may not provide source air isolation when pressure is applied. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, “Air Brake System.”

According to the NHTSA, unintended Spring Brake application may occur, increasing the risk of a crash, motor vehicle collision (“MVC”) or other impact event with consequential serious injury and/or life-changing results.

Please note that under 49 United States Code § 30112(a), it is illegal for anyone, including a manufacturer, distributor, dealer or retailer to sell an item of equipment or vehicle that fails to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Dealers will replace the SC-3 check valves, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 18, 2021. Blue Bird’s designation for this recall is R21BE-SB.
