Among the seventy-one (71) recalls the NHTSA announced this month, comes news of the following:

Logo - Kia Motors AmericaKia Motors America (“Kia”), an Irvine, California establishment and a subsidiary of Kia Motors Corporation of Seoul, South Korea, has recalled an estimated 147,249 model year 2020-2021 Kia Soul and 2021 Kia Seltos subcompact crossover Sport Utility Vehicles (“SUVs”) equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Engine – Improperly heat-treated Piston Oil Rings

NHTSA Safety Notification 21V259000 reports the Piston Oil Rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which may result in Engine damage.

According to the NHTSA, a damaged Engine may stall, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, oil may leak onto hot exhaust components, increasing the risk of a fire, explosion, burns and/or smoke inhalation with consequential life-changing or life-ending results.

Please note that under 49 United States Code § 30112(a), it is illegal for anyone, including a manufacturer, distributor, dealer or retailer to sell an item of equipment or vehicle that fails to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Kia will notify registered owners, and registered dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the Engine, free of charge. In addition, Kia will deploy Piston Ring Noise Sensing System (“PNSS”) software. The recall is expected to begin June 11, 2021. Owners may contact Kia Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-333-4542 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Pacific Standard Time (“PST”) for more information. Kia’s designation for this recall is SC209.
