US NHTSA Recalls: Mercedes-Benz GLE & GLS Vehicles

Among the sixty (60) recalls the NHTSA has announced in February 2021, comes news of the following:

Logo - Mercedes-Benz USAMercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (“MBUSA”), a Sandy Springs, Georgia establishment and subsidiary of Daimler AG of of Stuttgart, Germany, has recalled an estimated 41,838 model year 2020-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE450, GLE350, and 2020 GLS450, GLE580, GLS580 vehicles marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Electronic Stability Control – Electronic Stability Control malfunction in apparent contravention of US FMVSS 126

NHTSA Safety Notification 21V071000 reports that during certain evasive driving maneuvers, the recalled vehicle’s Electronic Stability Program (“ESP”) software may apply torque to one of the front wheels, pulling the vehicle to one side. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (“FMVSS”) number 126, “Electronic Stability Control Systems.”

According to the NHTSA, if the vehicle unexpectedly pulls to one side during an evasive maneuver, it can increase the risk of a crash, motor vehicle collision (“MVC”) or other impact event with consequential serious injury and/or life-changing results.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat lacerations, concussions, bone fractures, amputation, central nervous system (“CNS”) damage and/or internal injuries.

Please note that under 49 United States Code § 30112(a), it is illegal for anyone, including a manufacturer, distributor, dealer or retailer to sell an item of equipment or vehicle that fails to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Mercedes-Benz USA will notify registered owners, and dealers will update the ESP software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 13, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-367-6372 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”) for more information. No manufacturer’s designation was listed for this recall at press time.
