These Fresh Soft Cheese were known to be marketed, distributed and sold as El Abuelito branded Cheese in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania; Rio Grande Food Products branded Cheese in Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia; and Rio Lindo branded Cheese in Maryland and North Carolina, although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

If you are concerned about distribution outside the United States, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the FDA, El Abuelito Cheese has recalled the indicated batch/lots of Queso Fresco Fresh Soft Cheese products from the American marketplace due to suspected Listeria monocytogenes contamination. As a result of this reported defect, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Soft Cheese identified above.

The recalled unpasteurized Cheese products were produced at El Abuelito Cheese’s Plant #34-12179.

As of February 11, 2021, the CDC reports seven (7) people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes from four (4) states.

Importantly, the Connecticut Department of Public Health collected product samples of El Abuelito branded Hispanic-style Fresh and Soft Cheeses from a store where a sick person bought Cheeses. Sample analysis showed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in samples of El Abuelito Queso Fresco sold in 10-ounce packages, marked as Lot A027 with an expiration date of 02/26/2021.

Samples are currently undergoing Whole Genome Sequencing (“WGS”) analysis to determine if the Listeria monocytogenes found in these samples is a match to the outbreak strain. At this time, however, there is not enough evidence to determine if this outbreak is linked to El Abuelito Queso Fresco.

==> For information about Listeriosis (Listeria poisoning), please consult the “Illnesses” tab on this site, located at the top of this page.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisoning such as Listeriosis.
