Rapala Rechargeable Fillet Knife Recall [Canada]

Canada/Ottawa: Normark Inc., an Oshawa, Ontario establishment, recalls an estimated 7,082 Rapala Rechargeable Fillet Knives from the American marketplace due to suspected battery overheating and consequential risks of fire, burns, smoke inhalation and/or respiratory failure, cardiac collapse and/or property damage.

Health Canada/Santé Canada (“HCSC”) reports this reports this recall involves certain Rapala Rechargeable Fillet Knifes, as follows:

  • Rapala Rechargeable Fillet Knives, with black and gray handles with a “Rapala” logo printed in red on the handle, along with the style designation, “ION” in white.

Please consult the photograph above for details of the product’s packaging, design and retail presentation. Additional images of the recalled Fillet Knives can be found on the Web site listed above.

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the HCSC, batteries without the white label with the ETL certification mark (please see Web site images) can overheat and catch fire. Rapala USA reports the Battery can overheat and catch fire if non-Rapala Chargers are used to charge the Battery and pose a risks to the safety of people who utilize the product in a reasonable manner expected with its intended use.

Although Normark has received no reports of incidents and/or injuries in Canada, Rapala USA has received reports of twelve (12) batteries overheating and catching fire, in some cases causing property damage to surrounding areas. As of press time, no physical injuries had been reported.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Rapala Rechargeable Fillet Knives, please do not use them. Instead, contact Normark Inc. for a free replacement battery. You must provide a photo of the product demonstrating the missing label.

Please note: disposal of this product must be in accordance with local municipal hazardous waste requirements to protect the drinking water supply and the ecosystem.
