US FlagUS/Silver Spring: Publix Super Markets, Inc., a Lakeland, Florida establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Publix Steam-In-Bag Veggie products prepared in-store containing a specific Butternut Squash ingredient from the American marketplace due to suspected Listeria monocytogenes and consequential risks of Gram-positive bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Butternut Squash-based Veggie products are subject to this recall:

  • Publix Steam-In-Bag Veggies – Green Bean Butternut Squash, sold with a GTIN of 002-24887-00000 and sold between 01/03/2021 and 01/14/2021
  • Publix Steam-In-Bag Veggies – Season Butternut Medley, sold with a GTIN of 002-25399-00000 and sold between 01/03/2021 and 01/14/2021
  • Publix Steam-In-Bag Veggies – Butternut Brussel Pecan, sold with a GTIN of 002-25677-00000 and sold between 01/03/2021 and 01/14/2021

==> No barcodes, UPCs, NDCs, DINs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

These Publix Steam-In-Bag Veggie products were known to be marketed, distributed and sold under the Publix brand in the US states, regions, districts or territories of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia although it is always possible these food products had wider distribution within the country. When in doubt, please contact the manufacturer for specific product information.

According to the FDA, this recall was initiated due to reported risk of Listeria contamination from Butternut Squash products supplied by Race West Company, a primary ingredient supplier to Pero Family Farms, itself a supplier of the Butternut Squash to Publix. Pero Family Farms has temporarily halted production of these items its investigation into this issue continues. As a result of this reported defect, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Butternut Squash-containing products identified above.

Please note: while these food products may be close to or past their use-by dates, they may be in your freezers or storage chillers. If you have purchased these products during the time period ranging from January 1, 2020 and January 22, 2020, please check your refrigerators, chillers and/or freezers to ensure these food products have not been stored for future consumption. If found, these products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for refund.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

As stated above, if you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Publix branded Butternut Squash-containing Veggie products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the Butternut Squash products to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Listeriosis.
