Among the ninety-six (96) recalls the NHTSA announced this past month came news of the following:

Logo - Volkswagen Group of AmericaVolkswagen Group of America, Inc. (“Volkswagen”), a Herndon, Virginia establishment and subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group of Wolfsburg, Germany, has recalled an estimated 105,652 model year 2012-2014 Volkswagen Beetle and Beetle Convertible vehicles marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Air Bags – Driver Side Air Bag Inflator may explode

NHTSA Safety Notification 20V785000 reports the Driver’s Side Air Bag Inflator may explode due to Propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

According to the NHTSA, an Inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious serious injury and/or life-changing results including death.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat lacerations, concussions, bone fractures, amputation, central nervous system (“CNS”) damage and/or internal injuries.

Please note that under 49 United States Code § 30112(a), it is illegal for anyone, including a manufacturer, distributor, dealer or retailer to sell an item of equipment or vehicle that fails to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Volkswagen will registered notify owners, and dealers will replace the Driver Frontal Air Bag, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 12, 2021. Owners may contact Volkswagen Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-893-5298 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”) for more information. Volkswagen’s designation for this recall is 69BC.
