US NHTSA Recalls: Hyundai Santa Fe, Sonata & Veloster

Among the thirteen (13) recalls the NHTSA announced this month comes news of the following:

Logo - Hyundai Motor AmericaHyundai Motor America (“Hyundai”), a Fountain Valley, California establishment and a subsidiary of Hyundai Motors of Seoul, South Korea, has recalled an estimated 128,948 model year 2015-2016 Veloster, 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2011-2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, and 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid vehicles marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Engine – Engine damage may cause stall or fire

NHTSA Safety Notification 20V746000 reports the Connecting Rod Bearings inside the Engine may wear prematurely, which over time can result in Engine damage.

According to the NHTSA, a damaged Engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risks of fire, explosion, burns and/or smoke inhalation with consequential life-changing or life-ending results. This defect also reportedly increase risks of crash, motor vehicle collision (“MVC”) or other impact event with consequential serious injury and/or life-changing results.

Please note that under 49 United States Code § 30112(a), it is illegal for anyone, including a manufacturer, distributor, dealer or retailer to sell an item of equipment or vehicle that fails to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

What should you do?
Hyundai will notify registered owners, and dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (“KSDS”). Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 22, 2021.
