Australia FlagAustralia/Canberra: Ring LLC, a Santa Monica, California establishment and subsidiary of Seattle, Washington-based Amazon.com, recalls all current Second Generation Ring branded Video Doorbell products from the Australian marketplace due to overheating batteries caused by improper installation and consequential risks of fire, burns, smoke inhalation and/or property damage, all serious safety hazards.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (“ACCC”) reports this recall involves all Second Generation Ring branded Video Doorbell products, as follows:

The recalled Video Doorbells have a blue ring at the front and come in two colors/styles:

  • Ring Doorbell Satin Nickel, sold with a model designation of 8VR1SZ-SEN0
  • Ring Doorbell Venetian Bronze, sold with a model designation of 8VR1SZ-VEN0

The Doorbells were sold with a mounting bracket and a USB charging cable. The two-way Audio Doorbell can be hardwired or battery-powered and supports night vision. The Ring logo is printed on the bottom front of the Doorbell and the model and serial are printed on a label on the back of the Doorbell and the outer packaging.

You can determine if your Doorbell is included in this recall by entering the Doorbell’s serial number at the Ring Web site here: http://support.ring.com/ring-2nd-gen-recall. Please note: only Second Generation Ring branded Video Doorbell models within a certain serial number range are included in this recall.

==> No barcodes, UPCs, NDCs, DINs, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the ACCC, the Battery in the recalled Video Doorbells can overheat when the incorrect screws are used for installation, posing fire and burn hazards. The company has not disclosed if any fire, property damage or injuries have occurred with Ring Doorbells sold and installed in Australia.

In the US, however, Ring has received eighty-five (85) incident reports of incorrect Doorbell screws installed with twenty-three (23) of those Doorbells igniting, resulting in minor property damage. The firm has also received eight (8) reports of minor burns. In Canada, Ring has received one (1) reported incident in Canada with no reports of injury as of the date of this recall notification.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Ring branded Video Doorbell products, please check to see if they’re installed correctly, including any damage to the Lithium battery. If you have not installed the doorbell correctly, the battery is visibly damaged or have moved or reinstalled your device after charging, you should carefully follow the steps noted in the updated user manual or the Ring App. If you have experienced any issues when installing your device, you should immediately contact Ring LLC Customer Support.
