US FlagUS/Silver Spring: Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets, Inc., a Lakewood, Colorado establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Natural Grocers branded Organic Whole Elderberry Fruit from the American marketplace due to suspected Salmonella contamination and consequential risks of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

Additional information:
The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Elderberry Fruit products are subject to this recall:

  • Organic Whole Elderberries, sold in 4 ounce plastic bags with packed-on date codes of 20-216, 20-225, 20-246, 20-265 and 20-281 with a UPC of 000082003043

Please consult the photograph above for details of the food’s packaging, design and retail presentation.

==> No item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the FDA, this recall was initiated after the company’s primary ingredient supplier notified Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets of the suspected Salmonella contamination in certain lots of Organic Whole Elderberries. Consequently, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Elderberry Fruit products identified above.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Organic Whole Elderberries, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the Elderberries to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Salmonelosis.
