US NHTSA Recalls: Hyundai Kona Electric Vehicles

Among the fifty-nine (59) recalls the NHTSA has announced this month comes news of the following:

Logo - Hyundai Motor AmericaHyundai Motor America (“Hyundai”), a Fountain Valley, California establishment and a subsidiary of Hyundai Motors of Seoul, South Korea, has recalled an estimated 6,707 model year 2019-2020 Kona Electric Cars marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Electrical System – Lithium-Ion Battery may short circuit

NHTSA Safety Notification 20V630000 reports the Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) Battery may short-circuit after it is fully charged..

According to the NHTSA, an electrical short in the Li-ion battery increases the risk of a fire, MVA or other impact event with consequential injury and/or life-changing results.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat lacerations, concussions and/or bone fractures.

Hyundai will notify registered owners, and dealers will update the Battery Management System (“BMS”) software and inspect the Li-ion battery, replacing it if necessary, free of charge.

Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the repair is complete. The recall is expected to begin December 11, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai Customer Service toll-free at 1-855-371-9460 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Pacific Standard Time (“PST”). Hyundai’s designation for this recall is 196.
