US FlagUS/Silver Spring: CorgioMed, LLC, a Gaithersburg, Maryland establishment, recalls all current batch/lots of Leafree Instant Hand Sanitizer-Aloe Vera from the American marketplace due to reported labelling as “EDIBLE ALCOHOL” and consequential risks of inadvertent alcohol poisoning, alcohol toxicity and GI tract laceration damage, all serious health and safety hazards.

The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Leafree Instant Hand Sanitizer products are subject to this recall:

  • Leafree Instant Hand Sanitizer – Aloe Vera, sold in 100 ml bottles with a UPC of 6970495860325
  • Leafree Instant Hand Sanitizer – Aloe Vera, sold in 300 ml bottles with a UPC of 69705860318
  • Leafree Instant Hand Sanitizer – Aloe Vera, sold in 500 ml bottles with a UPC of 6970495860301

==> No barcodes, UPCs, DINs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the FDA, ingesting Hand Sanitizer, a drug product intended for topical (i.e., exterior) use, may result in Alcohol Toxicity. Symptoms of Alcohol Toxicity may range from lack of coordination, slowed or slurred speech, drowsiness to coma, which can be fatal. Young children may experience a sharp decrease in blood sugar which may result in death. Pregnant women who ingest alcohol have experienced birth defects and developmental disabilities.

Nursing mothers who ingest Alcohol in above-moderate levels may see developmental, growth and sleep pattern damages in their babies and may experience impaired judgement and ability to safely care for their child. Furthermore, ingesting Alcohol can affect the brain and cause impaired driving or operating heavy machinery.

Alcohol can also interact with numerous drugs which may result in serious adverse effects. Ingesting alcohol by people with alcohol addiction may interfere with maintaining abstinence. Additionally, people with alcohol addiction may seek large amounts of Ethanol-based Hand Sanitizers as a substitute. The labeling of this product as ‘edible Alcohol’ may promote this behavior. You should neither serve nor consume the recalled Hand Sanitizers identified above.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Hand Sanitizers, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the Hand Sanitizers to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

Disposal of this product must be in accordance with local municipal hazardous waste requirements to protect the drinking water supply and the ecosystem. Do not dispose of this product through your household sewer system. Instead, consult with your local pharmacist or municipal waste authority for disposal instructions.
