US NHTSA Recalls: ZF Air Bag Sensors

Among the three (3) recalls the NHTSA announced this month comes news of the following:

Logo - ZF North America, Inc.ZF North America, Inc. (“ZF”), a Livonia, Michigan establishment and subsidiary of ZF Friedrichshafen AG of Friedrichshafen, Germany, has recalled an estimated 189,883 model year Remote Accelerometer Sensors (“RAS”) installed in 2019 model year Chrysler Jeep Cherokee and 2018 model year Volkswagen Atlas vehicles marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Air Bags – Air Bag Crash Sensors damaged during manufacturing

NHTSA Safety Notification 20E052000 reports the Air Bag Crash Sensors may have been exposed to excessively high temperatures during manufacturing, resulting in damaged soldering connections within the sensors.

Logo - Chrysler FCAAccording to the NHTSA, a damaged air bag crash sensor may cause a delayed air bag deployment in a frontal crash or a risk of a non-deployment in a low speed crash, increasing the risk of injury”

ZF North America, Inc. has notified the vehicle manufacturers that purchased the affected parts. In turn, the vehicle manufacturers have notified their owners, and dealers will replace the Air Bag Crash Sensor, free of charge.

Logo - VolkswagenChrysler vehicle owners may contact Chrysler Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-853-1403 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”).  Chrysler’s designation for this recall is V63.

Volkswagen vehicle owners may contact VW Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-893-5298 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”). Volkswagen’s designation for this recall is 69AL.
