Canada/Ottawa: The Modern Meat Inc., a Vancouver, British Columbia establishment recalls certain batch/lots of Modern branded Tarragon Remoulade and Modern Meat branded ‘Crab’ Cakes, all made with Onions grown by Thomson International Inc., a Bakersfield, California establishment due to suspected Salmonella contamination and consequential risk of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”) reports the following Spreads and Snacks are subject to this recall:

  • Modern branded Tarragon Remoulade, sold in 250 mL, with a best-before date code of SEP 23 2020 and a UPC of 8 47004 00009 0
  • Modern Meat branded ‘Crab’ Cakes, sold in 300 gram packages, with a best-before date code of JAN 18 2021 and a UPC of 8 47004 00014 4
  • Modern Meat branded ‘Crab’ Cakes, sold in 6 by 50 gram packages, with a best-before date code of JAN 18 2021 and a UPC of 8 47004 00014 4

==> No item numbers, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the CFIA, The Modern Meat has recalled certain batch/lots of Modern branded Tarragon Remoulade and Modern Meat branded ‘Crab’ Cakes, made with Onions grown by Thomson International due to suspected Salmonella contamination. You should neither serve nor consume the recalled food products identified above.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Tarragon Remoulade and/or ‘Crab’ Cakes, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Salmonellosis.

As of August 14, 2020, there have been 339 confirmed cases of Salmonella Newport illness linked to this outbreak in the following provinces: British Columbia (78), Alberta (208), Saskatchewan (19), Manitoba (19), Ontario (8), Quebec (6) and Prince Edward Island (1).

Individuals became sick between mid-June and late July 2020. Forty-eight individuals have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Individuals who are known to have became ill are between three (3) and one hundred (100) years of age. The majority of cases (54%) are female.
