Canada/Ottawa: Logo - Krown Produce Inc.Krown Produce Inc., a Langley, British Columbia establishment, recalls all current batch/lots of Red and Yellow Onions from the Canadian marketplace sold by Thomson International Inc., a Bakersfield, California establishment due to suspected Salmonella Newport contamination with consequential risks of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”) reports the following Fresh Red, Yellow, White and Sweet Yellow Fresh Onions are subject to this recall:

==> No barcodes, UPCs, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the CFIA, Krown Produce Inc. has recalled all current batch/lots of Red and Sweet Yellow Onions grown by Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, California and imported from the United States into the Canadian marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination. You should not consume the recalled Onions identified above nor foods containing these raw Onions. Further, retailers, distributors, manufacturers, and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes should not serve, use or sell the recalled products

Distribution of these Onions is now thought to be throughout all Canadian provinces and territories. Consequently, we reccomend you should not eat, use, sell or serve any Red, Yellow, White and Sweet Yellow Onions grown by Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, California or any products made with these Onions. This warning applies to all individuals across Canada, as well as retailers, distributors, manufacturers and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes.

As of August 14, 2020, there have been 339 confirmed cases of Salmonella Newport illness linked to this outbreak in the following provinces: British Columbia (78), Alberta (208), Saskatchewan (19), Manitoba (19), Ontario (8), Quebec (6) and Prince Edward Island (1).

Individuals became sick between mid-June and late July 2020. Forty-eight individuals have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Individuals who are known to have became ill are between 3 and 100 years of age. The majority of cases (54%) are female.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Salmonellosis.

What you should do:

  • If you have Onions at home:
    • Carefully look for a label showing where the Onions were grown. It may be printed on the package or on an attached sticker.
    • If the packaging or sticker shows that it is from Thomson International Inc., don’t eat them. Throw them away, wash your hands and scrub all contact surfaces.
    • If it isn’t labeled, don’t eat them. Throw them away, wash your hands and scrub all contact surfaces..
    • If you don’t know whether the Onions found in a pre-made Salad, Sandwich, Wrap, Salsa, Dip or Guacamole products contain Onions from Thomson International Inc., don’t eat them. Throw them away, wash your hands and scrub all contact surfaces.
    • Remember to wash and sanitize any surfaces that may have come in contact with contaminated Onions or their packaging, including countertops, fridge drawers, pantry shelves, knives, cutting boards and cloth carry bags. Always use hot soapy water to wash your hands afterwards.
  • If you buy Onions at grocery or convenience stores:
    • Make sure they are not selling Onions from Thomson International Inc., or serving fresh foods prepared with them.
    • If you can’t confirm that the Onions in stores are not from Thomson International Inc., don’t buy them. If you’ve already purchased them, return them to the store or toss them in your household trash, making sure that children and pets can’t access them.
  • If you order salad or any other food items containing Onions at a restaurant or food establishment:
    • Ask the staff whether their Onions come from Thomson International Inc. If they did, or they don’t know, don’t eat it.
  • NEVER eat recalled food products. Check to see if you have recalled food products at home. If you do, throw them away, wash your hands and scrub all contact surfaces.
