Koo Produce branded Yellow and Red Onions from the Canadian marketplace due to suspected Salmonella contamination and consequential risk of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”) reports the following Yellow and Red Onions are subject to this recall:

  • Jim M. Koo Produce branded Wash Jumbo Yellow Onion, sold in five (5) pound bags distributed from July 21, 2020 to July 22, 2020 inclusive
  • Jim M. Koo Produce branded Red Onion, sold in five (5) pound bags distributed from July 4, 2020 to July 24, 2020 inclusive
  • Jim M. Koo Produce Processed Onions Peeled, sold in twenty (20) pound containers distributed from July 21, 2020 and July 22, 2020 inclusive

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the CFIA, Jim M. Koo Produce Ltd., a Vancouver, British Columbia establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Jim M. Koo Produce branded Yellow and Red Onions from the Canadian marketplace due to suspected Salmonella contamination. You should neither serve nor consume the recalled Yellow and Red Onions identified above.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Salmonellosis.

As of August 7, 2020, there have been 239 confirmed cases of Salmonella Newport illness linked to this outbreak in the following provinces: British Columbia (67), Alberta (149), Saskatchewan (5), Manitoba (13), Ontario (3), Quebec (1) and Prince Edward Island (1). These infections have been traced to contaminated Onions and products made from or with these contaminated Onions produced and sold by Thomson International of Bakersfield, California.

Distribution of Onions from Jim M. Koo Produce is currently thought to be only in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is possible, however, that these products were distributed to other provinces so consumption of the recalled Onions should be avoided throughout Canada until further notice or unless the Canadian Food Inspection Agency certifies they are fit for human consumption.

This outbreak is currently throughout the United States and Canada. According to Public Health Canada, Canadians became sick between mid-June and late July 2020. To date, at least twenty-nine individuals have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Individuals who became ill are between 0 and 100 years of age. The majority of cases (54%) are female.
