Canada/Ottawa: Copperside Foods Ltd., Fresh is Best Salsa and Company and Sobeys Capital Inc. expand the existing recall for certain batch/lots of Fresh is Best Salsa & Skeena Select branded Spreads, Sandwiches and Salads to include numerous products made with Red, Yellow, White and Sweet Yellow Fresh Onions sold by Thomson International Inc., a Bakersfield, California establishment from the Canadian marketplace.

The original recall was initiated due to suspected Salmonella Newport contamination and consequential risks of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

  • Skeena Select branded BBQ Beef Sub, sold in 295 gram tubs with a UPC of 0 204157 706994
  • Skeena Select branded Broccoli Salad, sold in variable sizes with a UPC of that starts with 0 205116
  • Skeena Select branded Chicken Quesadilla, sold in 280 gram tubs with a UPC of 0 205153 105996
  • Skeena Select branded Pizza Sub, sold in 405 gram tubs with a UPC of 0 204109 706997
  • Unbranded Butter Chicken Sauce (Frozen), sold in 100 gram containers
  • Unbranded Curried Quinoa Kale Salad, sold in variable sizes with a UPC of that starts with 0 205117
  • Unbranded Gourmet Sandwiches – Small, sold in variable sizes with a UPC of that starts with 240060
  • Unbranded Gourmet Sandwiches Entertaining, sold in variable sizes with a UPC of that starts with 257369
  • Unbranded Greek Pasta Salad, sold in variable sizes with a UPC of that starts with 0 205130
  • Unbranded Greek Salad, sold in variable sizes with a UPC of that starts with 0 205106

==> No best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the CFIA, it has recalled certain batch/lots of Spreads, Sandwiches and Spreads made with Onions grown by Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, California and exported from the USA into the Canadian marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination. You should not consume the recalled Onions identified above nor foods containing these raw Onions. Further, retailers, distributors, manufacturers, and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes should not serve, use or sell the recalled products

As of August 7, 2020, there have been 239 confirmed cases of Salmonella Newport illness linked to this outbreak in the following provinces: British Columbia (67), Alberta (149), Saskatchewan (5), Manitoba (13), Ontario (3), Quebec (1) and Prince Edward Island (1).

Distribution of these Spread, Sandwich and Salad products is currently thought to be in the Canadian provinces and territories of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It is possible, however, that these products were distributed nationally so consumption of the Spread, Sandwich and Salad products made with the recalled Onions should be avoided throughout Canada until further notice or unless the Canadian Food Inspection Agency certifies they are fit for human consumption.

Canadians became sick between mid-June and late July 2020. Twenty-nine individuals have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Individuals who became ill are between 0 and 100 years of age. The majority of cases (54%) are female.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Salmonellosis.
