13339 - EU RECALL PULL HERE" Electric Shock Chewing Gum Toy Recall [EU]

“PULL HERE” Electric Shock Chewing Gum Toys, sold with model designation numbers of 01198 for the Green “Gum” and JB–50528 for the Yellow “Gum” (pictured, at left).

These Electric Shock Chewing Gum Toys are marketed as small, novelty toys suitable for creating a surprise electric shock for the unsuspecting user of the product. The devices are designed to fool people into thinking they are standard chewing gum packages with one foil-wrapped piece of Gum exposed to extract from the package.

The recalled Toys were sold in two “flavors”: a green version with a knock-off trademark design of Wrigley’s “Doublemint” branded Chewing Gum and a yellow version with a knock-off trademark design of Wrigley’s “Juicy Fruit” branded Chewing Gum. Neither model contains actual Chewing Gum suitable for consumption.

No barcodes, UPCs, DINs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, batch/lot designations, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

The type of hazards presented in these recalled “PULL HERE” Electric Shock Chewing Gum Toys include the reported finding that the pulse generated by these Novelty Toys can produce a sudden and unexpected electric shock to the user. These shocks can be particularly dangerous to vulnerable people such as those with internal implants including cardiac pacemakers and heart monitors as well as pregnant women and young children. In addition, the product does not have instructions in the appropriate national language for which it was marketed, sold and delivered for the safer use of this electrical shock toy.

As a direct consequence of these reported defects, an end user could contact the live part of the “PULL HERE” Electric Shock Chewing Gum Toys and suffer electrical injury or burns. Further, there is a non-zero chance of impairment or malfunction of any implanted cardiac or cerebral devices when being operated in a reasonable manner expected with its intended use leading to cardiac arrest, brain damage and/or death.

Due to these defects and their associated risks, these “PULL HERE” Electric Shock Chewing Gum Toys do not comply with the requirements of the applicable European standard EN 60335-1.

Consequently, a recall of these “PULL HERE” Electric Shock Chewing Gum Toys and a withdrawal of the products from the European marketplace [and recall from end users} has been ordered.
