Canada/Ottawa: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”), an Ottawa, Ontario regulatory and food safety authority expands the existing recall for certain batch/lots of Onions to include all Red, Yellow, White and Sweet Yellow Fresh Onions from the Canadian marketplace sold by Thomson International Inc., a Bakersfield, California establishment.

The original recall was initiated due to suspected Salmonella Newport contamination and consequential risks of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”) reports the following Fresh Red, Yellow, White and Sweet Yellow Fresh Onions are subject to this recall:

The Fresh Onions were distributed under the following brand names

  • El Competitor
  • Imperial Fresh
  • Onions 52
  • Tender Loving Care
  • Thomson Premium
  • TLC Thomson International
  • Thomson International
  • Thomson International Premium

And in the following form factors:

  • Mesh Sack
  • Carton
  • Box
  • Bulk

==> No barcodes, UPCs, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the CFIA, it has recalled all batch/lots of Red, Yellow, White, and Sweet Yellow Onions grown by Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, California and imported from the USA into the Canadian marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination. You should not consume the recalled Onions identified above nor foods containing these raw Onions. Further, retailers, distributors, manufacturers, and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes should not serve, use or sell the recalled products

Please note, these Raw Fresh Onions may also have been purchased on-line or through various restaurant locations. They may also have been sold in bulk or in smaller packages with or without a label and may not bear the same brand or product names. When in doubt, ask your supplier or toss out the suspect Onions.

As of August 2, 2020, there have been one hundred and twenty (120) confirmed cases of Salmonella Newport illness linked to this outbreak in the following provinces: British Columbia (43), Alberta (56), Saskatchewan (4), Manitoba (13), Ontario (2), Quebec (1) and Prince Edward Island (1).

Distribution of these Onions is currently thought to be in the Canadian provinces and territories of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and the Yukon. It is possible, however, that these products were distributed nationally so consumption of the Onions in this recall notification should be avoided throughout Canada until further notice or unless the Canadian Food Inspection Agency certifies they are fit for human consumption.

Individuals became sick between mid-June and mid-July 2020. Seventeen (17) individuals have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Individuals who became ill are between 3 and 100 years of age. The majority of cases (56%) are female.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacterial poisonings such as Salmonellosis.
