US FlagUS/Sliver Spring: Thomson International Inc., a Bakersfield, California establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Red, Yellow, White and Sweet Yellow Fresh Onions from the American marketplace due to suspected Salmonella Newport contamination and consequential risk of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Fresh Onions are subject to this recall:

The Fresh Onions were distributed under the following brand names

  • El Competitor
  • Food Lion
  • Hartley’s Best
  • Imperial Fresh
  • Kroger
  • Majestic
  • Onions 52
  • Tender Loving Care
  • Thomson Premium
  • TLC Thomson International
  • Utah Onions

And in the following form factors:

  • Five (5)-pound carton
  • Ten (10)-pound cartons
  • Twenty-five (25)-pound cartons
  • Forty (40)-pound cartons
  • Fifty (50)-pound bulk cartons
  • Two (2)-pound mesh sacks
  • Three (3)-pound mesh sacks
  • Five (5)-pound mesh sacks
  • Ten (10)-pound mesh sacks
  • Twenty-five (25)-pound mesh sacks
  • Fifty (50)-pound mesh sacks

==> No barcodes, UPCs, DINs, item numbers, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, regulatory approval designations, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the FDA, the recalled Fresh Onions were known to have been distributed to wholesalers, restaurants and retail stores in all US 50 states, the District of Columbia and into Western Canada. You should neither serve nor consume the recalled Fresh Onions identified above.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Red, Yellow, White and Sweet Yellow Fresh Onions, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the Onions to the store where you purchased it for a full refund. Further, you should immediately discard these Onions and disinfect any cutting utensils and/or preparation surfaces that came into contact with the onions

Please note: while these Fresh Onion products may be close to or past their use-by dates, they may be in your freezers or storage chillers. If you have purchased these products within the past three months, please check your refrigerators, chillers and/or freezers to ensure these food products have not been stored for future consumption. If found, these products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for refund.

The US Food and Drug Administration, along with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections that may be linked to these onions, so Thomson International is recalling the onions out of an abundance of caution. As of now no specific source of contamination or contaminated shipment has been identified, and FDA is also investigating other potential sources of contamination and has not yet reached a final conclusion.

As of the press time of this recall notification, there have been 396 total illnesses have been reported to date in the United States including fifty-nine (59) hospitalizations with the case-count by state as follows: AK (6), AZ (14), CA (49), CO (10), FL (3), ID (5), IL (10), IN (2), IA (15), KS (1), KY (1), ME (4), MD (1), MI (23), MN (10), MO (6), MT (33), NE (5), NV (5), NY (4), NC (3), ND (5), OH (7), OR (71), PA (2), SC (1), SD (11), TN (5), TX (1), UT (61), VA (4), WA (2), WI (5) and WY (11).
