US NHTSA Recalls: Kia Soul Electric Vehicles

Among the twenty-one (21) recalls the NHTSA announced this July comes news of the following:

Kia Motors America ("Kia")Kia Motors America (“Kia”), an Irvine, California establishment and a subsidiary of Kia Motors Corporation of Seoul, South Korea, has recalled an estimated 3,714 model year 2015-2016 Kia Soul Electric Vehicles (“EV”) marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Power Train, Electrical System – Unintended movement due to damaged PARK mechanism

NHTSA Safety Notification 20V389000 reports the parking mechanism in the recalled vehicles may become damaged if the driver moves the gear shift lever into PARK ‘P’ before the vehicle comes to a complete stop. If the parking mechanism is damaged, unintended vehicle movement may occur when the gear shift lever is in the PARK ‘P’ position and the parking brake is not applied.

According to the NHTSA, unintended vehicle movement can increase the risk of a crash, MVA or other impact event with consequential injury and/or life-changing results.

Kia will notify registered owners, and dealers will update the electronic control unit software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin August 7, 2020. Owners may contact Kia Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-333-4542 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”). Kia’s number for this recall is SC191.
