US NHTSA Recalls: Gillig Hybrid & All-Electric Buses

Among the twenty-one (21) recalls the NHTSA announced this July comes news of the following:

Logo - Gillig LLCGillig LLC (“Gillig”), a Livermore, California establishment and a subsidiary of Henry Crown & Company of Wheeling, Illinois, has recalled an estimated 531 model year 2013-2020 Gillig Hybrid and All-Electric Low Floor Buses equipped with a steering system that uses a high-voltage electric motor and hydraulic pump assembly to provide power steering assist. marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Steering – Loss of Power Steering Assist

NHTSA Safety Notification 20V392000 reports the shaft coupling between the motor and pump may fail and cause a loss of hydraulic power steering assist.

According to the NHTSA, a loss of power steering assist may increase the risk of crash, MVA or other impact event with consequential injury and/or life-changing result.

Gillig will notify registered owners, and dealers will replace the motor-pump assemblies, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin August 3, 2020. Owners may contact Gillig Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-735-1500 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Pacific Standard Time (“PST”). No manufacturer’s designation was listed for this recall at press time.
