Among the thirty seven (37) recalls the European Union has announced in its fourth report of May 2020, the following recall notification was made:

Deer Creek branded Lazer Diode Torch Recall [EU]

Deer Creek branded Lazer Diode Torch Laser Pointers, sold with a model number of DC-05, an unknown batch/lot code and a barcode/EAN/UPC of 7340009347199. The products are marketed as laser fire starters and devices that can cut certain types of plastics, including fishing line.

Technically, the functional element of the recalled Lazer Diode Torch Laser Pointers consist of a blue laser beam with a nominal wavelength of 405 nanometers. These products are marketed for do-it-yourself applications such as fly tying and/or resin polymerization and/or curing.

No batch/lot designations, best-before date codes, manufacturing date codes, production dates, expiry dates, registration numbers, agency approval designations or other codes were listed with this recall.

The type of hazards presented in these recalled Deer Creek branded Lazer Diode Torch Laser Pointers include the reported finding that the laser product lacks the required labellng, including appropriate warning texts related to the use of the product and the specific type of laser classification. Further, its laser beam is too powerful for the purpose for which it is sold and can cause injury.

Specifically, this device can cause burns, including retinal damage, which may be long-lasting and produce injuries that are life-changing. Direct viewing of the laser beam or its mirror reflection can cause damage to eyesight. These injuries can range from superficial charring of skin up to and including blindness when operating the device in a reasonable manner expected with its intended use.

Due to these defects and their associated risks, these Deer Creek branded Lazer Diode Torch Laser Pointers do not comply with the requirements of the applicable European Safety Directives and the relevant European standard EN 60825-1.

Consequently, a recall of these Deer Creek branded Lazer Diode Torch Laser Pointers and a withdrawal of the product from the European marketplace and recall from end users has been ordered.
