Additional information:

Among the forty one (41) recalls the NHTSA announced this May comes news of the following:

Logo - Volkswagen Group of AmericaVolkswagen Group of America, Inc. (“Volkswagen”), a Herndon, Virginia establishment and subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group of Wolfsburg, Germany, has recalled an unspecified number of Volkswagen Beetle, Volkswagen Beetle Convertible and Volkswagen Passat vehicles sold and equipped with Takata Phase-Stabilized Ammonium Nitrate (“PSAN”) Desiccated Air Bag Inflators.

This recall is part of the much larger Takata Air Bag Inflator Recall, an ongoing situation that is the largest and most complex automotive recall in United States history. It currently involves 19 vehicle automotive manufacturers and approximately 63 million inflators installed in tens of million vehicles marketed, sold and delivered in the United States and Canada.

Recall Category: Air Bags – Air Bags may suddenly explode

According to the NHTSA, millions of Takata PSAN Air Bag Inflators may suddenly explode increasing the risk of severe injury or death. In addition, it is not currently known if the recalled Air Bag Inflators will protect vehicle occupants in the event of a crash, MVA or other impact event.

You can watch an informative video titled, “What’s Wrong With Your Air Bag?” available here: https://www.nhtsa.gov/equipment/takata-recall-spotlight#consumers-overview.

In this case, Volkswagen will notify registered owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the Takata Phase-Stabilized Ammonium Nitrate (“PSAN”) Desiccated Air Bag Inflators as necessary, free of charge. This recall is expected to begin as soon as parts are available.

Volkswagen will recall vehicles by filing defect notices for three (3) separate groups of vehicles. These defect reports begin the recall process for vehicles in the respective group. The availability of repair parts depends on which of the three groups a vehicle is in. Parts are expected to be provided to dealers after the submission of each defect report.
