US FlagUS/Washington: Essential Trading Post, a New Bedford, Massachusetts establishment, recalls an estimated 200 Wintergreen and Birch Essential Oils from the American marketplace due to suspected failure to meet US child resistant closure requirements under the US Poison Prevention Packaging Act and consequential risks of poisoning, ingestion and GI tract laceration damage, all serious health and safety hazards.

US Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) reports this recall involves certain bottles of Essential Trading Post branded Wintergreen and Birch Essential Oils:

  • The phrases, “Essential Trading Post”, “Wintergreen Oil” or “Birch Oil” (as applicable) are printed on the green and white label. The Essential Oils were sold in 1 dram (4 mL), 0.5 fluid ounce (15 mL), 1 fluid ounce (30 mL), 2 fluid ounce (60 mL), 4 fluid ounce (120 mL), 8 fluid ounce (240 mL) and 16 fluid ounce (480 mL) bottles. The Essential Trading Post logo and product name are printed in black on each bottle while the SKU can be found printed on the bottom, as follows:
    • Essential Trading Post Wintergreen Essential Oils, sold in 4 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244690954
    • Essential Trading Post Wintergreen Essential Oils, sold in 15 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244690961
    • Essential Trading Post Wintergreen Essential Oils, sold in 30 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244690978
    • Essential Trading Post Wintergreen Essential Oils, sold in 60 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244690985
    • Essential Trading Post Wintergreen Essential Oils, sold in 120 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244690992
    • Essential Trading Post Wintergreen Essential Oils, sold in 240 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244691005
    • Essential Trading Post Wintergreen Essential Oils, sold in 480 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244691012
    • Essential Trading Post Birch Essential Oils, sold in 4 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244685639
    • Essential Trading Post Birch Essential Oils, sold in 15 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244685646
    • Essential Trading Post Birch Essential Oils, sold in 30 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244685653
    • Essential Trading Post Birch Essential Oils, sold in 60 mL bottles with a SKU of 731244685660

According to the CPSC, this recall was initiated because the product contains the drug Methyl Salicylate, a substance that must be sold and stored in child resistant packaging as required by the US Poison Prevention Packaging Act (“PPPA”). The packaging of the recalled Wintergreen and Birch Essential Oils is reportedly not child resistant, posing a poisoning risk if the contents are swallowed by young children.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Essential Trading Post branded Wintergreen and Birch Essential Oils please do not use them. Instead, immediately store the product in a safe location out of the reach of children and contact Essential Trading Post for a full refund. The firm is directly notifying all known purchasers about the recall.
