US NHTSA Recalls: Takata Air Bag Inflators for Honda & Nissan

Among the forty one (41) recalls the NHTSA announced this April comes news of the following:

Logo - American Honda Motor Co.American Honda Motor Co. (“Honda”), a Torrance, California establishment and a subsidiary of Honda Motor Company of Tokyo, Japan, and Nissan North America, Inc. (“Nissan”), a Franklin, Tennessee establishment and a wholly owned subsidiary of Nissan Motor Company of Japan has recalled an estimated 1,318,212 vehicles manufactured with Takata Corporation (“Takata”) PSDI-5D Driver Air Bag Inflators marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Air Bags – Driver Frontal Air Bag Inflator May Rupture

NHTSA Safety Notification 20E022000 reports that due to a manufacturing error, the recalled Air Bag Inflators may not function properly or the Inflator may explode in the event of a crash that necessitates driver air bag deployment.

According to the NHTSA, an explosion of an inflator within the driver frontal air bag module may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver, front seat passenger or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death

Takata will work with affected American Honda Motor Co., Nissan North America, Inc. and other OEMs as necessary to replace the Driver Frontal Air Bag Module, free of charge. Owners may contact Takata Customer Service toll-free at 1-248-373-8040 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”). No manufacturer’s designation was listed for this recall at press time.
